What are we talking about?

Eye Tests

Here at The Young Clinic we pride ourselves on the comprehensive quality of our sight tests. Our optometrists are not only fully qualified but regularly attend refresher courses to stay up to date with modern ideas and research.

Our eye examinations can be broken down into four fundamental parts.
  1. Symptoms & History. This is where we find out what problems you are currently having with your vision. We will discuss your previous eye problems as well as those of your immediate family. We will need to know about your state of health and any medication you are taking. So that we can prescribe glasses accurately and appropriately we will ask about your occupation, your hobbies, whether or not you use a computer and whether or not you drive.
  2. Refraction. This is a fancy word for the eye testing part of the examination. We ascertain how well you can see with or without your current glasses, as appropriate. Using a special torch and by asking you specific questions we will determine the lenses that allow each eye to achieve the best vision for distance and for reading, and we will then examine how efficiently your eyes work together as a pair. Many people find this part of the examination very stressful as they are afraid they will give the wrong answer and end up with the wrong glasses. Please rest assured that there is no wrong answer! We always double or treble check the results if there are any inconsistencies, and in the rare cases that you do not achieve the vision you expect with your new glasses, we are very happy to review the prescription to see if further improvements can be made.
  3. The third part of the examination relates to the health of your eyes and body. We look at the front and back of your eyes using special lenses and lights and we can detect changes in your eyes that may be associated with diabetes or raised blood pressure. If appropriate we will do a visual field check, and if you have opted for our Eyecare Package numbers 1 or 2, we will show and discuss with you the backs of your eyes in unbelievable detail.
  4. Finally, having collated all the information we can about your eyes, we are in a position to advise you on the best course of action that will help you see as clearly and as efficiently as possible. This may include contact lenses and/or different pairs of glasses for specific tasks such as computer, driving, golf or television. If we have detected a general health or eye health problem we will discuss referral to an appropriate practitioner, either on the NHS to, or via, your GP, or privately to one of our excellent local eye specialists.

We are always keen to explain the tests we do, why we do them, and the significance of the results. In fact we actively welcome your interest as it helps us to help you make informed decisions about your eyecare.

The most common visual defects that require spectacle or contact lens correction are:

Short sightedness (myopia)

Long Sightedness (Hyperopia)

Astigmatism (Rugby ball shaped eyes)

Presbyopia (Vision after 40 years of age)

If you follow the above links they will take you to a short animation describing each condition. Each link opens a new page so it is easy to come back here afterwards.

The Clinic/practice provides free NHS eye tests for those who are eligible. You may also be entitled to vouchers that can be used against the purchase of glasses or contact lenses if you require them. To find out if you are eligible for assistance please ask one of our reception staff. Appointments for eye tests can be booked over the phone, or by dropping into the practice.
